This Austrian gilded white lusterware vintage salt & pepper set has the unique opalescent quality that makes them appear to change colors as the light bounces off of them. At any given moment you can see hues of pinks, blues and greens – just like the fire in an opal stone.
Predominantly white, or so they appear, the marbleized colors of blue, pink, and green take over in the light. The shakers are gilded gold across the shaker top and also have a gilded 1/4” band on the bottom.
These porcelain pillar shakers stand at 3” tall (7.6 cm). They are 1 1/2” wide (3.8 cm) at the base and taper to 1 1/4” (3.2 cm) at the top.
This elegant set was made by O. & E. G. (Oscar & Edgar Guntherz). It has the green “Royal” mark inside the laurels – Austria and the O. & E. G. hallmark on the bottom.
Imperfections: One of the shakers has 2 small chips in the top gild. (Shown in the last picture.)The stoppers are missing from both shakers but small corks are simple replacements to make these shakers functional once again.
This set was part of my mom’s salt & pepper collection. They may have been handed down in the family.
These shakers would make an elegant addition to any table setting or salt and pepper collection.
