This is a Primitive OLD European Yarn Winding Spindle spool. They would HAND make them out of whatever pieces of wood and materials they had available. And because of that....NO two are EVER exactly alike. Many times when we find these they're either too damaged OR drab looking for us to carry. But we DO carry them from time to time when we can find one that displays as beautifully as THIS one does! Please DON'T be fooled by the old aged and worn wood. This is a SOLID and VERY HEAVY piece at over SEVEN Pounds. They tied the yarn around the wooden "arm" and then wound it quickly onto the spool by turning the big wooden wheel. THEN when they wanted to actually USE the yarn...they'd just start knitting or whatever. This way....they didn't have a "ball" of yarn bouncing all over the place. They could just place the whole wooden piece on a table next to them and it would allow the spool to slowly roll round and round as you used the yarn up. Old time ingenuity at its FINEST! Meanwhile....they'd use the box portion below to store their needles, other yarn balls.... etc. in. Just a wonderful Primitive piece would look beautiful as a conversation display piece....even MORE precious if you arranged some yarn or thread balls in it! And the PERFECT gift for someone who DOES sew, knit, crochet....etc. The wood is OLD and worn with a beautiful warm old patina. Lots of OLD nails from w it was constructed! Just a really charming piece. Measures 12 1/2" tall, 18 1/2" long & 6 1/2" wide. The dimensions INSIDE the box are 12 5/8" long by 6" wide and 3 1/4" deep.
