A beautiful ceramic wallhanging crafted by Norwegian artist Finn Hald probably in the 1960s (unsure of exact time period as his works vary from the 1950s thru the 1970s).
"The husband and wife team of Dagny and Finn Hald of Norway are well known for their ornamental plaques." (quoted from the book "Scandanavian Design: Objects of a Life Style" by Eileene Harrison Beer.)
The piece is comprised of six individual tiles that were attached to heavy backboard within a metal surround with 2 metal hanging pieces (metal is probably bronze), all of the metal having been soldered at the corners to form the frame & to attach the hanging pieces. The tiles are done in various shades of dark reds, browns, beiges and greens, with a glossy glaze finish, and have a nice overall textural quality. The bottom right tile shows the initials "FH"; and the reverse shows presumed signature of F. Hald, as well as 2 words in quotes (Norwegian?, possibly the title).
There is also a paper label/business card taped on the back that reads: Prydkunst Hjertholm, Torvalmenning 8, (Inng. Radhusgaten), Telephon 21 78 60, 5000 Bergen; with handwritten "Handmade by Finn Hald".
This is a large piece that measures approximately 17" wide, 12 3/4" high (plus 3/4" for the 2 hanging pieces), and 3/4" deep; and is quite heavy (over 11 pounds without packing). It is in excellent condition (tiles are a bit rough around the edges which may be how they were when originally set onto the backboard).
(NOTE: display stand is not included; nor is the book mentioned above)
A unique one-of-a-kind piece and a wonderful addition for the collector of vintage Scandinavian ceramics.
