This newly handmade stocking features a vintage quilt in a wonderful "make-do" patchwork pattern. Details are:
~ The stocking is a traditional size, measuring 21 inches vertically (not including the hanging loop) when displayed as shown in the photos. It has the vintage quilt fabric on both sides, so the stocking can be hung with the toe facing left or right or in a place where both sides will be seen (floor lamp, chair back, bedpost, etc.).
~ The quilt that I used to make the stocking is a "make-do" quilt, which means that the quilter used whatever fabrics she had available. It is a "one patch" design with no discernible pattern. Most of the fabrics are feed sack. The quilt likely was made by a child or young woman without a lot of sewing experience. The hand-stitched quilting is sweetly large stitches, done in several different pastel color threads. The quilt was made to be loved and used. All of the fabrics are faded, some more than others, and there is some wear in a few spots. These characteristics do not detract from the stocking but add to its vintage charm. ~ The double foldover cuff is vintage-style woven (not printed) red and white striped cotton ticking fabric.
~ The full lining is new cotton quilting fabric in a reproduction feed sack Christmas design of little trees. The hanging loop is vintage-style Petersham grosgrain ribbon.
~ I used two different interlinings in the body, lining, and cuff to give the stocking structure and make it more durable. For example, at the top, where the cuff is double, the stocking has 16 layers of fabric (counting both sides), and the stocking body is 8 layers thick (both sides, including lining).
~ All seams are double stitched or serged, so the stocking is very durable and can be filled with lots of goodies at Christmastime.
The vintage quilts that I use in my stockings are 60 to 100 years old. They have been loved and used by their previous owners. I choose the best sections of the quilts for stockings, but the quilt fabrics inevitably have some signs of age, such as slightly faded fabrics, very small areas of wear (nothing major), and occasionally small spots or marks. The fabrics are not new, and so the stockings have "vintage appeal." They are probably not suitable for buyers looking for stockings that look "brand new."
