ITEM # 11419 (Box-1)
This is an antique, artist signed "Crumley" hand painted tea set consisting of a lidded sugar bowl, creamer and tray.
The sugar and creamer are marked MZ Austria and the tray is marked AK France, all pieces of porcelain from the 1900's. No chips, cracks or repairs, just typical wear due to age and handling. They have a pretty pale yellow background with yellow and blue floral design.
The tray measures 11" by 8', sugar bowl is 3 3/4" tall and 6" handle to handle.
The creamer is 3" tall and 4 3/4" spout to handle.
Upon research I discovered that an artist by the name of Crumley was employed by Bawo & Dotter Company, a Limoges distributor in New York City from 1860-1932 as a porcelain decorator. These pieces, along with many other porcelain pieces, some marked Limoges, some not, were purchased as a collection by myself from the deceased estate of a Mrs. Crumley.
Further research also concluded that Bawo & Dotter often employed women in what was referred to as the "cottage movement", so named for the women in their employ were given Limoges blanks to return home with, paint, and return for sale and distribution. Since these pieces are not stamped with the distributor, I assume she had kept these in her personal collection, and were not intended for resale through the company.
