Sparkling natural faceted golden calcite gemstone, accented with a natural white zircon, in solid sterling silver pendant necklace. This genuine gem measures 5.5 x 6.5 mm, and weighs .65 carats. Accenting the primary stone in this pendant is a genuine 2 mm white zircon.
Calcite is a carbonate mineral and is the most stable form of calcium carbonate, one of the more common earth minerals. Although calcite is a fairly common material, faceted and polished gemstones are quite unusual. With a hardness of only 3 on the Mohs scale, calcite is soft; but it does take an excellent polish. The gem is most suitable for pendants and earrings, where it is safer from hard blows and damage. Natural calcite crystals exhibit the property of 'birefringence', i.e., they can break light into two distinct polarized beams, which makes faceted gems appear somewhat blurry or waxy. The transparent variety, in which the double refraction is clearly apparent, is used as prisms for polarizing microscopes and gem-testing refractometers!
This pendant comes complete with an 18 inch baby box chain. Soft stones such as this need modest protection from scratching by other metal jewelry pieces. To help avoid dulling scratches, your new pendant will arrive in a lovely gift box that is ideal for safe long-term storage.
