Putti in Renaissance Art were winged or wingless, male children. In the early Italian Renaissance: the decorative use of Putti in Art and Architecture became popular, as Italians harkened back to their rich Roman Culture with pride. One of the earliest Renaissance examples of Putti had them holding garlands, as is found on this Pillow. Putti often represent Love in the form of Eros and Venus. In Bacchanals, Putti represented fertility, abundance, and the fruits of life. Putti were secular, and sometimes profane, though not religious at first. In the Baroque period, Putti were often used in a religious context and the distinction between being secular or religious became blurred. Particularly when paired with Doves, as seen in this Pillow, which is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.
