A dainty paneled/scalloped edge is trimmed with two gold bands on this vintage butter pat. Three sets of pink rose trios decorate two sides of the pat. The center group of roses has a garland of tiny roses underneath. A pale blue ribbon links all of the rose groupings together. This delicate design is on off-white porcelain.
This piece measures approximately 3 1/4” (8.3 cm).
There is no maker’s mark on this piece.
It does have crazing that truly adds charm to the piece. Overall it is in very good to excellent condition. There are no cracks or chips.
Mom also collected butter pats and this is from her collection.
The butter pat is also commonly known as a butter chip or individual butter. These small dishes were originally designed to hold individual servings of butter (a pat). No Victorian table was complete without individual butters. When setting the “proper” table – the butter pat is placed left of the center of the service (dinner) plate. Typically butter pats are no more than 3 inches round. These dainty items are sought after by collectors and are a wonderful collection for beginners. There is such a wide variety of styles, shapes, colors and designs and most are often very affordable.
This sweet little dish has so many uses. Of course it can be used as it was originally intended – an individual’s serving of butter. It can be placed by any sink in the house to collect your rings so they don’t get damaged by soap & water (or God forbid, slip off and go down the drain). It can be a small soap dish for a tiny decorative soap that would dress up the smallest of powder rooms. It would look adorable hung on a wall or placed in a china cabinet. And, of course it could serve numerous purposes on any dressing table or night stand.
