This vintage Yorkshire swirl pattern was one of the very first dinnerware patterns made by Metlox, introduced in 1937 and discontinued in the early 1940s, making it a little difficult to find. This Yorkshire ivory matte gravy boat or sauce boat is marked on the base Metlox 522 Made in USA. California Pottery is very collectible, as is Metlox dinnerware, especially those from the earlier Prouty years.
This sauce boat is in wonderful vintage condition, with no cracks, chips or stains, looking as if it was unused. It has that great satin feel to it that some older pottery has.
Metlox Potteries was founded in 1927 in Manhattan Beach, California. Dinnerware was produced starting in 1931 and these early patterns are called Prouty dinnerware. The company produced little during the war years and was sold in 1946. Many new patterns were started then. Poppytrail (1946-1989) and Vernonware (1958-1980) were divisions of Metlox. The factory closed it's doors in 1989.
