Real ebony hair tidy jar in a simple black wood cylindrical jar with a hole in the screw top lid through which to poke loose hair. The jar is made from West African Gaboon ebony, dating to the 1920s or 1930s.
The jar would originally have been used as a loose hair container after brushing, but with its hole in the lid is also perfect for dressing table trinkets such as cotton buds, hatpins and cosmetic applicators.
The jar is carved with the word, "Gaboon Ebony" to the base. This is an exotic West African wood that is is extremely hard, dense, and heavy and has a very fine texture, perfect for delicate wood turning work such as creating the threads for the screw top.
The vintage jar is a lovely item for the dressing table, with a surprisingly sleek and contemporary look despite its great age. It would make a great gift for her, or for anyone who loves vintage vanity items.
