This stoneware brown miniature stein vintage toothpick holder has a picture of Chincoteague Island featuring a pony, sea gulls, and a lighthouse.
The tan stoneware stein has brown rings at the top. The picture is composed of brown and auburn coloring and has black details.
It measures 2 1/2” tall x 2 1/2” wide (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm) including the handle.
The underside is marked with a silver foil sticker that reads, “by Nanco Nancy Sales Co. Inc. Chelsea, Mass. 02150 Made in Taiwan”
Chincoteague Island is located in Virginia and is most widely known for the Chincoteague Ponies which actually “live” on nearby Assateague Island. These ponies were seen in the 1961 family film “Misty” that was filmed on location and taken from the children’s book “Misty of Chincoteague”.
Legend states the feral ponies on Assateague are descendents of the horses that survived the sinking of a Spanish galleon during a storm in 1950.
Mom picked up this little souvenir when she visited Chincoteague Island about 25 years ago. It is in very good condition. It has some slight white staining on the inside of the stein near the top. There is a spot on the back where it looks like there was a glaze “whoopsie” but it does not detract at all from the piece itself.
This miniature stein is a wonderful collectible for those who collect Virginia souvenirs, stoneware, steins, or love horses.
