Large 2L Jug from circa 1910, well known design by Karl Gelhard, made by Reinhold Merkelbach, Germany.
Strikingly beautiful rows of circles with a floral & star relief in each (59 to be exact).
Highly glazed deep cobalt blue on light grey/cream stone.
No lid, though there is a pre-made slot on the handle to fit one.
There are no scratch marks or any other indications that a lid was ever attached, in fact the glazing appears like new, completely untouched around the pre-slotted attachment point, a sure sign that this piece was originally purchased without a lid.
Very good condition, fully intact with only a couple of minor glazing grazes. Very few signs of wear, this piece appears largely unused, or very little.
Skilled, artistic application of relief which give of beautiful broken light reflection shimmers.
Solid, thick handle for secure grip, this is a truly stunning Jug which would also double up for use as an equally stunning Vase.
Very clean inside and out.
It is marked with the Merkelbach form number 2283 at the bottom, strangely though the actual Merlkelbach stamp was not applied, instead it was marked with an oval stamp of 'The Old Flemishe StoneWare'.
This in itself is highly unusual and certainly the first time I've ever seen this on a Merkelbach piece.
It suggests that this design by Karl Gelhard was called 'The Old Flemishe', possibly because it was inspired by old stoneware designs from Flanders (now Holland & Belgium) in the 17th/18th century.
Though nearly all Merkelbach pieces carry model numbers, there is no record of what the various design lines were actually called. Two world wars took their toll on paper records, so this is really a rare piece of insight into this well known Gelhard design from circa 1910.
