"The Golden Staircase", edited by Louey Chisholm, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1928.
Lime-green cloth-bound hardback. 556 pages. 6" x 8". Gilt-embossed cover.
Acceptable worn condition, some shelf wear; spine faded to yellow; top of spine is frayed/split about ½com down for an inch across; remainder is normal shelf-wear/marking you would expect for a book that has clearly been much-loved - and with good reason. Binding sound. Inside flyleaf has been inscribed "This book belongs to Munro's + Allens" and a previous entry blacked out; back endpapers have a few marks. Otherwise, the inside is very clean and strong, pages lightly tanned.
This delightful book is packed with poems and verses for children of all kinds, some short, some long, and in varying language from very simple to more complex, covering childhood, family, prayers, Christmas, Christianity, Easter, spiritual and worldy guidance (or what we would now call 'life coaching'...) the seasons, animals, traditional fairy-tales and nursery rhymes, gardens, flowers and nature, epic historical or legendary events, childhood games, friendship, adolescence, first love, ballads, babies and lullabies, sacred poems, farming, and some pieces from famous writers and poets. This lovely book would please every age from small children being read to, through thoughtful, intelligent older children to young teenagers, sensitive and serious older teens, and most adults with a feel for nostalgic childhood and the gentle things we have lost in our modern world, as there really is something in it to suit all ages. Not every child or even adult would appreciate this book, but to those who would, it would and would understand it, be a very precious gift. I really am extremely reluctant to part with it!
Illustrated throughout with the most beautiful black and white line illustrations either from the orginal Edwardian, or from the late 'Twenties, by C.E and H.M. Brock.
