D. W. Griffith, the famous movie maker is honored on this 1975 10 cent US vintage postage stamp that is part of the American Arts issue.  This listing is for an unused sheet of 50 stamps.  The Griffith stamps were issued on May 5, 1975 at Beverly Hills, California.  They were designed by Fred Otnes.

Shades of brown and beige with strips of blue provide the background to the profile of D. W. Griffith and his movie camera.  Verbiage on the stamp reads:  “Movie Maker     US 10¢      D. W. Griffith”

Each stamp measures 1 1/2" wide by 1" tall (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm).  The full sheet measures 9" wide by 10 1/8" tall (22.9 cm x 25.7 cm).

These stamps are “mint” – meaning they have never been used.  All perforations are intact.  They have the original glue.  They have however aged and the white has yellowed.  There is a slight crease across the top row of stamps.

David Llewelyn Wark Griffith (1875 - 1948) was a pioneer in filmmaking.  He is best known as the director of the 1915 “Birth of a Nation” and 1916 “Intolerance”.  In “Birth of a Nation” he used advanced camera & narrative techniques.  In 1919 he joined together with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks & Charlie Chaplain in forming United Artists.  Chaplin called Griffith “The Teacher of Us All.”

My grand-aunt collected stamps.  She was not a “true” stamp collector & basically stored them in manila envelopes.  Whenever the USPS came out with a new stamp – especially a commemorative one – she purchased at least one sheet & put them away in her envelopes.

These stamps are great for collectors both young and old alike. Additionally, they’d be great for paper crafting & jewelry making or anywhere else your creativity wants to take you. They are also a great gift for someone born on the day the stamps were issued. Frame them and give them as a nice and thoughtful gift – or keep them for yourself.
